Showcase Teacher – Matt Anderson

Matt AndersonThis month’s showcase teacher is Matt Anderson of the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) in Pittsburgh. Matt began using the Civic Mirror at The Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction in New York City, he then took a position teaching education methods at CCAC where he continues to use the Civic Mirror. Matt uses CM to expose education students to new and innovative ways to instruct and keep kids engaged in learning.

Through Matt’s tutelage these education students are learning valuable lessons about innovative teaching methods in the classroom. Research proves that what teachers are exposed to and use in the first four years of teaching predicts what they’ll continue to do for the rest of their career.Pittsburgh

In Matt’s CCAC country of Beautopia he made great use of the online discussion forums, posing questions and assignments for his student teachers. By using the forum he not only opened the door for great discussions, but also exposed them to an cutting edge teaching and learning tool.

For example, Matt challenged his students to do the following:
“As educators, it’s our job to create learning experiences that promote student understanding and there’s no better way to do this than using material that relates to the students.

Your assignment is to create a lesson using connections from the Civic Mirror. Make sure to be specific and include examples so we know what you are trying to do!”

His students’ ideas were fantastic:Community College of Allegheny County

Natalya would use CM in a science class for a unit on geography to emphasize how human actions affect our environment: “They [the students] would try to make businesses into trees and such. They would do activities on how in real life this affects the earth and the life living on it. Then, they would do the opposite. They would destroy all green hexes and see how that affected them. They would look into what we are doing to the environment by destroying rainforests and farming on land and depleting it of its value. They would then compare and contrast what they discovered.”

Bunny, a congress member in Beautopia, would use the Civic Mirror in an English course: “Civic Mirror would be a great tool to use for an English Unit in which students would monitor the game experiences and write several personal reflections regarding emotional effects of humanistic behavior, personal beliefs on government control as well as a predictive paper on hidden agendas.”

Both Natalya and Bunny “get it,” students learn better when they:

a) experience what they’re learning, and
b) reflect on how what their learning relates to their life and the world they live in.

Kudos to Matt for promoting educational change for the next generation of teachers!

Peter Levine, Civics Expert, Explains Why We Need Civic Education

In a recent interview with Education News Colorado, Peter Levine, Director of  CIRCLE, outlines several of the myths surrounding civic education in the United States, and convincingly argues why the topic is vitally important for the future of American democracy. Levine explains:

  • collaboration and problem-solving are in decline
  • people without college education are not participating in civic work and duties
  • there exist vast gaps in civic engagement and opportunties
  • civic education can improve life-outcomes for youth

Thanks to Peter Levine for the outstanding work and research, and to Education News Colorado for the great interview. It only encourages us to work harder to grow and develop the Civic Mirror and contribute to the improvement of civic education across the continent.

Referendum Brings Drama to Procrasti-Nation

Prime Minister Mujtaba of Procrasti-Nation is being attacked from former Members of Parliament who are furious with the referendum held.

Citizens of Procrasti-Nation – the country run by a grade 10 Civics class at Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario – pleaded with the Prime Minister for a re-election. The country was distraught with the Fascist movement their government was heading for and wished to start fresh. In response, Prime Minister Mujtaba held a referendum to eliminate 3 Members of Parliament, all who were behind the Fascist Movement in Procrasti-Nation’s government.

Referendum Results:

On January 14th, Prime Minster Mujtaba announced the results, calculated by the class instructor, Mr. Manning:

62.5% voted yes to eliminate the 3 MPs.
29% voted no to eliminate the MPs.

Prime Minister Mujtaba revealed his plans post-referendum to the nation:
“…first remove Bhavpreet, Adam, and Peggy from the government. Next I will repeal the laws which the citizens referred to as Fascist
…”

Former Member of Parliament’s Response:

Former MP Adam vocalizes his anger and betrayal in a public forum:
“OBVIOUSLY, the whole point of this referendum was so Mujtaba can stay in power, while he backstabs [the] other people…”
Former- MP Adam, as well as fellow former-MP Bhavpreet do not lose momentum, and they continue to fight for a re-election in the country of Procrasti-Nation.

As of now..

The country remains with Prime Minister Mujtaba in power with his 3 Members of Parliament by his side. However, the fight lives on in Procrasti-Nation to one day regain the full 7-person Democratic Government that is now a thing of the past…

While the news wasn’t all bad, here are some of the key findings as they relate to the Civic Mirror and citizenship education:

  • Americans with more education dominate civic engagement
  • Those who assume leadership roles in community groups are highly involved in all other forms of civic engagement, but make up just 8.5% of our total population.
  • The Internet appears to build civic health

Civic Mirror Showcase Teacher – Carly Althauser

Carly AlthauserThe Civic Mirror is a tool that helps innovative teachers bring the 21st century into their classrooms. Like any tool, users must be creative and inventive to get the best results. One such innovator is Carly Althauser of College Place Middle School in Edmonds, Washington. In this post we showcase Carly and her innovations.

Carly’s History With The Civic Mirror
Carly, now well into her second year using the Civic Mirror, has found the program beneficial to students of all types. From the enthusiastic learner to students struggling with a learning disability to those who are just going through the motions, Carly has found that “learning moves beyond textbooks and allows—actually, demands—that students learn through experiences.” This process of learning, experiencing, reflecting, and connecting is the corner stone of the Civic Mirror philosophy.

Carly’s Innovations
Carly has created several new documents that have helped her students better understand the complexities of government and economics while using the Civic Mirror.

Edmonds, WAFirst, she created the Political Party Caucus (Middle School) document. By breaking the complex caucus process down into clear instructions, Carly’s made it easier for her students to understand the process more clearly while they are experiencing it. Her Political Party Caucus document includes:

  • an outline a caucus and its objectives,
  • tips to help students choose a party platform from (i) their own thoughts and values, and (ii) their Civic Mirror hidden agenda,
  • a nomination form so everyone in the party knows which members are running for each positions.

Carly also created the Handouts for Government Members (Middle School Version) document. This handout explains what the responsibilities for each political position are (e.g. senator, house rep, president, etc.). It also clearly outlines how student politicians go about creating a bill, allowing them to take their experiential learning to a higher level more quickly.

Additionally, Carly created the Intro To Hidden Agenda Skeletal Notes Sheet (Middle School Version) which is a brilliant cloze activity that challenges students to recollect what they learned about the political spectrum before receiving their Civic Mirror hidden agendas. By working through this activity, students prior knowledge is activated, increasing the likelihood that it will be remembered into the future, and making every students’ hidden agenda assignment more relevant and rich with context.

Excellence in Teaching
By creating these documents, Carly has done several things:College Place Middle School

  • shown a commitment to teaching and learning by creating documents that her students will understand,
  • achieved ‘student buy-in,’ which has
  • increased engagement, which has
  • improved learning and participating in her classroom, which has
  • helped her students learn about U.S. government, history, and society in a 21st century way.

With such a mind for innovation and a desire to get the best from her students, it will be exciting to see where Carly goes from here.

Mud Slinging Takes Over Civic Mirror Country

Hexaslovakian, a country under the leadership of instructor Ben Boucher at Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo, Ontario, Member of Parliament Jon began his morning on Tuesday November 2, 2010 bright and early with this post:

Benjamin, I feel that the actions you have taken to strip the government of all its money was inappropriate and made you severely hypocritical. You may say, “That doesn’t even make any sense.” After you took the time to sue Brent, you went behind the peoples’ back and did the exact same thing you accused him of.

MP Ben replied with a succinct rebuttal,

“Your logic makes no sense. Try again.”

Of course MP Jon responded,

“Excuse Me Mr. MP, but I believe you understand perfectly well the reasoning behind my logic, so I kindly ask you to give the people of Hexaslovakia an explanation.

MP Ben replied,

“I will explain my position in town hall today, that way everyone will receive the same explanation.”

The topic became heated as the each MP began to argue about correct spelling and grammar within their posts.   Much like politicians in countries like the United States, the two MP’s began to sling verbal mud at one another.  The post ended with first with MP Jon’s comment,

“I feel our citizens deserve to know that Mr. Lidbetter took it upon himself to press the power button on my computer while i responded not once but twice very mature for one of our nations leaders.”

And finally an accusation from MP Dan,

“Ben I am seriously concerned that you felt the need to accuse me of stealing from the government while you have stole ten thousand dollars and the power hex and show no intention of returning them.”

Hexaslovakians have a long road to hoe if they are looking for peace within their own government.  Will Ben be able to wriggle out of trouble, or will he find himself without a job?

Dictatorship Rules Civic Mirror Country Pandora

On Monday, October 25, Pandorians, a class lead by instructor Cheryl Payne at The Woodlands School in Mississauga, Ontario, logged into their Civic Mirror Accounts to this message from Member of Parliament Tommy:

People of Pandora…
I am sure that what has happened today has distressed you, for i too am distressed. However, we have to give people chances… for no one, not even the members of Pandora First, knows that will happen.

If this dictatorship brings equality and justice to our country, then so be it…

However, if this dictatorship creates a country of no voice or equality.

Then we the people of Pandora are allowed to take actions in to this.

However, in order for this to work we need to co operate and they need to co operate with us….

Honestly, what is a government with no people…

An example is when Jason S. thought he had no power in the beginning, we realized he had one of the most. He was usually the one to finalize the yes or no to the Bills.

Therefore, people of Pandora, I urge to stand firm and realize the potential power we possess, not as an individual but as a group.

If this dictatorship brings no positive impact in the public general sense then we, the people of Pandora, will take action.

My final Message:
We can make this work, if co operation exists.

Citizen Stella remarked,

“I personally think that, by having a dictatorship is already not what I would call equality. It’s as if our fate lies in their hands.  It’s true they said that they want to help us, but if we propose something that (unintentionally) goes against their Hidden Agendas, they will simply just reject what we proposed. So by having only them to decide everything is already inequality.
Notice that they have already disapprove of HoC, Town Hall, Court, etc. So, no voting on anything what so ever…

Citizen Usman replied,

“Hey, Tommy you took my quotesmiley for :)
I posted kinda the same thing
I partly agree, but already in the year 2000 we are in a bad situation
I don’t want to experiment with the same party in power for next year.”

Citizen Andrew commented,

“So much for Pandora FIRST!!”

Citizen Joshua left a sobering, but important comment,

“I was never “Pandora First!”
Its always been ‘get a good mark first”

Civic Mirror Country Discuss Country Scarcities

Dodojota instructor, Ms. Fruend, begun the day on Tuesday October, 12 with this question:

After our open market, there were definitely some obvious imbalances between citizens of Dodojota. Do you think this is something people just have to accept or
could and should they be minimized? How?

Dodojotians responded with different amounts of passion and idealism:

Citizen Vikrant was the first,”I think they should be minimized by either making some kind of law where citizens have some kind of equal chance in getting the different units and apartments or some other fair way where all the citizens agree.”

Citizen Rebecca had an important and vital understanding,” I believe that the imbalances between people should be minimized, but I see no way to properly do that when we live in a society where every hex produces only half the units needed for everyone in the country. I think that everyone should be able to buy food and powered housing at least, because there is enough of that to go around. Even that would help imbalances a little. There is no way that everyone could have the same number of well-being points without the government totally controlling who is allowed to trade for what, which rather defeats the purpose of democracy. I think that as long as everyone has the essentials, the only other thing we can really do is make sure everyone has a chance to get something else.”

Citizen Keren came forward with a similar perspective but a different understanding of that perspective,”After the first open market I know that there are imbalances between the citizens because some citizens have little or no money but are living fairly well and there are also other citizens with a lot of money but no house, food, or other necessities. I think that we should minimize the imbalances by creating laws which allow every citizen to have an opportunity to purchase what they need for their family. Citizens can also take action by signing a contracts with their neighbours to get what they need and repaying them later.”

MP Emma had a personal reason to grieve,”… I do NOT think this is something we just have to deal with because i think Zebediah Bold Prince, Demon Defender, and Nobel forest knome have already died in my family… those were the best 3 names, too…”

Then Citizen Ryan shared an opinion on poverty and welfare,” I think this is fair. Ideally, the government should only support those in poverty that are living like this because they didn’t have chances and opportunities. (EX in the game: not having much money to start) People that are living in poverty but lost all of their money because of their own faults really shouldn’t get support….”

Lastly, Citizen Joseph’s point is worth quoting,”The difference in financial and economic prosperity is very visible after the open market. To some extent these differences have to be accepted. There are some inconveniences that cannot be controlled. For example, students who are absent from class have no way of catching up after events such as open market. These differences can still be controlled but to a degree. In order to do so, I plan, on the next House of Commons day, to pass the Limit Law. This law will limit the amount of units an individual may purchase. In this way everyone has a greater chance of getting what they need. The government welfare system will also work to counter this by supplying less financially stable citizens with enough money to bring them up to the average of money owned by citizens.”

Is the unfair use of resources inevitable in every country or can everyone have equal access? What is the best way to move towards equality?  Should we move towards equality?
