The Open Market (Spring 2000) Civic Mirror Classroom Video Series, Episode 13

Open Market

Open Market

This video shows the second event in every simulated year, The Open Market (Spring season). In this event students head down to the computer lab, log into civicmirror.com, and begin buying, selling, and trading goods and services in order to provide well for their families.

What’s truly fascinating is now students must consider what they are legally entitled to do. Unlike the Practice Run (Episode 1), they must now consider the laws outlined in their constitution (Episode 6) as well as the laws and policies their government passed in the previous Government Event (Episode 12). Just like in the real world, some citizens will obey the law while others will not. What’s more is that some citizens will get richer and more powerful, while others may be left homeless and starving. It’s a great event that brings the interplay between governments and economies to life.

Your students will need at least 25-35 minutes of computer time and will likely plead for more. Remind them, however, that the market will not close until you advance the program past the Fall season and end the simulated year. This means that they can continue with their online trading (outside of class) until then.

ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT THE CIVIC MIRROR IS?
Basically it’s a government and economics simulation that turns classrooms into countries and students into citizens. Far more than just a game, The Civic Mirror is a fully comprehensive civic education program that turns the old rules of teaching and learning on their head. Students actively assume real-world citizenship roles – both in the classroom and online – and work as individuals to provide for imaginary families and achieve hidden agendas, while working together to build a strong, democratic nation.
